This is for you if…

Most of my students already have good English. What they're missing is the confidence to use it under pressure, and a clear plan for what to practise. If any of these sound familiar, we should talk.

  • 01You need Band 7 or higher for a visa, a university place or professional registration, and Speaking is the part holding you back.
  • 02You translate in your head before you speak, so your answers come out short and hesitant.
  • 03You've done practice tests on your own, but without knowing what to fix, your score isn't moving.
  • 04You want honest feedback from a real person, and a plan that fits your exam date.

A clear plan, not more hours

Most students don't need to study harder. They need to know exactly what to practise, and how. That's my job.

  1. 1

    A clear starting point

In the free introduction, I find out what's really holding your score back.

  2. 2

    A focused plan

We work on the one or two things that will move your band most, instead of trying to fix everything at once.

  3. 3

Tools you can use on your own

Lesson notes, corrections and simple practice routines for between lessons. Programme students also get my full set of workbooks and activities.

The four things the examiner is listening for

Your Speaking band comes from four scoring areas, and each one counts equally. Knowing which one is holding you back is the quickest way to improve. Here's what each one really means, where students usually get stuck, and what we do about it in lessons. Every lesson targets at least one of them, so you'll always know why we're doing what we're doing.

25%

Fluency

Official name: Fluency & coherence

In plain English: Can you keep talking, and can the examiner follow you?

What it means for you

This isn't about speaking fast. It's about keeping going without long silences while you search for words, and linking your ideas so they make sense together. If you often stop and restart sentences, or run out of things to say after one line, this is probably where we'll start.

What we work on

  • Timed Part 2 talks, until two minutes starts to feel short
  • Simple ways to extend any answer: a reason, an example, a contrast
  • Natural linking language that fits what you're saying, rather than memorised connectors
  • Buying thinking time naturally, so a pause sounds like thought, not panic
What the examiner hearsBand 6 stops, restarts and sometimes loses the thread. Band 7 keeps going easily, pausing to think about ideas rather than to search for words.

Vocabulary

Official name: Lexical resource

In plain English: Do you have the words you need, and do they sound natural?

What it means for you

Band 7 doesn't need long, impressive words. It needs the right word in the right place, the ability to talk about less familiar topics, and another way to say something when the word you want won't come. If you keep reaching for "very good", "nice" and "important", or you know a word when you read it but can't find it when you speak, this is your area.

What we work on

  • Vocabulary for the topics that come up again and again: work, study, technology, the environment, cities and more
  • Collocations, the word partnerships that make English sound natural (make a decision, not do a decision)
  • Paraphrasing, so one missing word never stops you
  • Moving words from "I recognise it" to "I use it"

A note on memorised phrases: examiners are trained to notice rehearsed "Band 9 phrases", and they don't show what you can really do. We build vocabulary you can actually use.

What the examiner hearsBand 6 says "it was very good". Band 7 says "it was genuinely rewarding", and uses it in the right place.

Grammar

Official name: Grammatical range & accuracy

In plain English: Can you use a range of sentence types, and get most of them right?

What it means for you

You probably know more grammar than you use. Under pressure, a lot of students fall back on short, simple sentences, or try something complex and lose control of it halfway through. Band 7 needs both: variety, and plenty of sentences with no mistakes at all.

What we work on

  • The grammar each part of the test calls for: past tenses for Part 2 stories, conditionals and comparisons for Part 3
  • Short, clear explanations, then lots of speaking so it becomes automatic instead of something you calculate
  • Your personal repeat mistakes, fixed one at a time
  • Corrections written into your lesson notes, so you can review them between lessons
What the examiner hearsBand 6 tries complex sentences but makes frequent mistakes. Band 7 uses them often and gets most of them right.
25%

Pronunciation

In plain English: How easy are you to understand?

What it means for you

You don't need a British accent, and you don't need to lose your own. The examiner is listening for clarity: individual sounds, word stress, the rhythm of your sentences and how your voice rises and falls. If people sometimes ask you to repeat yourself, or you sound flat even when you're interested, this is worth working on.

What we work on

  • The specific sounds that cause problems for speakers of your first language
  • Word and sentence stress, so your key words stand out
  • Rhythm and chunking, so you sound natural rather than word by word
  • Short drills you can repeat at home

I use British English as my model, but the goal is clear English that still sounds like you.

What the examiner hearsBand 6 is generally clear but takes some effort to follow. Band 7 is easy to follow throughout, with an accent that's still yours.

The band comparisons are simplified examples to show the difference. They are not the official IELTS band descriptors.

  2. Speaking assessment

A 30-minute session with a full mock Speaking test, timed like the real thing, and some quick feedback straight afterwards. In your next lesson, we go through your estimated band for each of the four scoring areas and agree what to fix first.

  3. Lessons

50-minute lessons built around the areas you need most and all three parts of the test. After each one, you'll get notes, corrections and homework.

    Lessons

A typical lesson: a short warm-up chat, one focus area such as linking ideas or word stress, timed practice with exam-style questions, then feedback. Nothing is scripted. If something isn't working for you, we change it.

  4. Progress you can see

Regular mock tests, so you know where you stand and what's left to do before your exam.

    Progress you can see

I record our lessons, so you can watch them back and hear the difference between your first week and your last. You always get feedback, and I track each of the four scoring areas between lessons and adjust your plan as you improve.

The person on the other side of the call

Before teaching, I spent ten years in hospitality, finishing as a general manager. That job taught me how much it matters to be understood the first time, and how frustrating it is when you're not. Now I combine that with close study of how IELTS Speaking is marked and regular mock tests, so you always know where you stand and what to work on next.
